Brown Women’s Wrestling Launches #OpenTheGates Campaign to begin building our endowment
Brown Women’s Wrestling Club (BWWC) has announced the launch of its #OpenTheGates campaign, aiming to build an endowment to support the blossoming program. Inspired by Brown University’s iconic Van Wickle Gates, the campaign symbolizes opening new doors for women in wrestling, particularly at the pinnacle of academic institutions, the Ivy League. The mission is clear: create opportunities for female athletes so they don’t have to choose between academic excellence and athletic prowess.
The Van Wickle Gates at Brown University are more than just a historic landmark; they represent significant transitions in the lives of Brown students. Traditionally, students pass through these gates only twice during their time at Brown: once when they enter as freshmen and again when they graduate. The gates symbolize both the beginning of a transformative journey and the culmination of years of hard work and dedication.
The #OpenTheGates campaign draws directly from this symbolism, emphasizing the opening of opportunities for female wrestlers at Brown. Just as the Van Wickle Gates mark the start and end of a student’s journey at Brown, the campaign seeks to open new paths for women in wrestling—paths that allow them to pursue both academic and athletic excellence without compromise. The campaign is about more than just financial support; it’s about creating an environment where female athletes can thrive in all areas of their lives.
“We’re asking our supporters to help us open these gates once more—not just for our current athletes, but for future generations of female wrestlers who will pass through them,” said Nick Lattanze, the newly appointed head coach of Brown Women’s Wrestling. “The Van Wickle Gates represent opportunity and new beginnings, and with this campaign, we’re creating those opportunities for women in wrestling at Brown.”
Impact and Allocation of Proceeds
The goal of the #OpenTheGates campaign is to build an endowment, which will be used to support various aspects of the program, including our goal of becoming the first Ivy League team to sanction a D1 Women’s Wrestling program.
How to Get Involved
“We’re inviting our supporters to not just donate, but to join us on this journey,” added Lattanze. “Whether it’s through financial contributions, sharing our mission on social media, or mentoring our athletes, every bit helps us to maximize your impact. Together, we can open the gates to new possibilities for our team.”
For those interested in supporting the campaign, donations of all sizes are welcome. All contributions are tax-deductible, with proceeds going directly to support the team’s goals and ensure the future success of Brown Women’s Wrestling.

Conclusion
The #OpenTheGates campaign is about more than just raising funds; it’s about advancing the sport of women’s wrestling while reinforcing the importance of academic achievement. By drawing inspiration from the Van Wickle Gates, the campaign highlights the unique opportunity Brown has to lead in both areas, ensuring that female wrestlers can pursue their passions without having to choose between them.
